For example, associations, municipalities and educational institutions may apply for support for projects which develop rural businesses and living conditions. Agricultural project supports are partly funded by the EU and they are funded by the Rural Development Programme for Mainland Finland.

Support applications are made to local Economic Development, Transport and Environment Centres (ELY Centres) or local action groups. The Finnish Agency for Rural Affairs steers ELY Centres and action groups in the implementation of support. 

Business development projects improve the operating environment of enterprises in rural areas.

Non-profit development and investment projects improve the quality of life and attractiveness of the countryside. 

Education and communication projects maintain the professional skills of rural operators, improve competitiveness, promote skills to learn new things and relay information about new methods.
